TONY JAY : IN MEMORIUM
1933 - 2006
Springbok Radio legend, Tony Jay sadly passed away on 13 August 2006,
late of Los Angeles in the USA. Tony will always be remembered for his
exceptional acting voice & entertained Springbok Radio listeners for
almost two decades. Tony not only acted but also wrote, produced &
adapted many serials and plays that were broadcast on Springbok Radio.
Some of his work included:
Taxi (1969-1973, 1975-1978) - portrayed the character Red Kowalski, also
wrote many of the scripts in conjunction
with Joe Stewardson.
The Sounds of Darkness - portrayed the character Lee Masters, also
(1969-1973) produced and wrote many of the episodes
in conjunction with Gerrie van Wyk.
Also adapted, wrote, produced & acted in many episodes of "Lux Radio
Theatre", "Playhouse 90", "Tuesday Theatre", "The Avengers" & many
others.
He was for many years the voice behind the "Gunston Cigarettes",
"Barclays Bank" & "Bols Brandy" commercials & also the voice behind
the "Squad Cars" billboard.
To Tony's family our deepest sympathy from all in South Africa that knew
him, that worked with him & that enjoyed his wonderful talents.
