| The Springbok Radio Preservation Society of South Africa was formed in 2002, a non-profit organisation that preserves the archives of Springbok Radio, the first commercial radio service in South Africa which operated between 1950 and 1985. The Society managed to archive close on 17,000 complete Springbok Radio program, 3,000 commercials & numerous miscellaneous recordings including signature tunes, station identifications, literature, scripts, photographs and promotional material. In 2005 the official website of the Springbok Radio Preservation Society of South Africa was launched to highlight the work being done in the preservation and archiving of the material. It also gave the Society an opportunity to share some of the archived material, and very quickly the website became a haven for South Africans looking for nostalgia from the golden age of South African radio. Since the creation of the Society, we have had a very close relationship with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Radio Archive, to which the whole collection of the Society was donated in 2011. Material has also been donated to other countries national archives, these include donations to Canada, Australia, Namibia & the United Kingdom. On 1 July 2008, the Society launched "The Internet Radio Service of Springbok Radio", an internet audio streaming service that streamed restored material of Springbok Radio programming, and also included newly produced programmes. On 1 February 2010, the Service was relaunched as "Springbok Radio Digital" in conjuction with the SABC. In 2011 the Service was also handed to the SABC, who will have it up and running again as soon as possible. As most of the material is between 60 to 25 years old, great care was taken in the handling of all source materials and all sound archive protocols are followed and maintained with audio restorations. The latest restoration software was acquired to ensure the best possible restoration results. In addition to the restoration process, research was done and programs labeled with correct titles, episode numbers and broadcast dates as available. In some instances the program scripts were also held. Recordings were obtained mainly through the courtesy of old time Springbok Radio producers, writers, actors and sponsors. A special mention also goes to the many old time Springbok Radio listeners that took the time and effort to record programmes whilst Springbok Radio was still on air. Special mention however must be made to the following people who donated material and also have been helpful with knowledge & support towards this Society: Henry Diffenthal (Producer - Olympia Recording Studios, Durban) Estate of the late Ron Evans (Writer) Estate of the late Kenneth Hendel (Writer/Producer) Estate of the late Ken Hoskin (Broadcaster, Producer) Gerrie van Wyk (Producer) Adrian Steed (Writer/Producer/Actor/Broadcaster) Merle Wayne (Actress) Sheila Raymond-Jones (Actress/Broadcaster) - Late Kevan Mardon (Durban) MaryAnne Trivisonno (Colorado, USA) Neil Gesson (Brakpan) - Late Pip Freedman (Actor/Comedian) - Late Les Smith (UK) Jean Henderson (Writer) John Lee (Writer) Leon van Nierop (Writer) Lerina Erasmus (Writer) Hugh Rouse (Actor/Writer) - Late Dr Reg Barrett (Broadcaster) - Late Brian O'Shaughnessy (Writer/Actor/Producer) - Late Frank Graham (Actor) Tony Jay (Actor/Writer/Producer) - Late Retha Buys (SABC Sound Archive) Ilse Assmann (SABC Sound Archive) Al Debbo (Actor/Singer) John Ferreira John Gregg Bob Courtney (Broadcaster) Dana Niehaus (Broadcaster) - Late Danie Smuts (Broadcaster) - Late Gordon van Rooyen (Actor/Writer/Producer) South African Defence Force Archives, Pretoria Dulcie van den Berg (Actress/Broadcaster) - Late Jan Cronje (Actor/Broadcaster) - Late Don Lambrecht (Actor) - Late Robin Davis (SABC, Durban) Isador Davis (Broadcaster) - Late Evelyn Martin (Broadcaster) Percy Sieff (Producer/Writer/Broadcaster/Actor) - Late Margaret Logan (Actress/Writer) Estate of the late Bruce Anderson Estate of the late Timothy Bungey Paul Desmond (Broadcaster) - Late Michael Mayer (Actor/Broadcaster) Michael McCabe (Actor/Writer/Producer) |
